On 1 September, the fully revised edition of Doing What Matters – Resilience at Work with ACT will be published. Over the coming weeks, I will share a thought from the book each week.
In Chapter 1, I ask a seemingly simple question: what do we actually mean by health?
We quickly think of our bodies. No illness, no pain, no abnormalities found during a medical examination: healthy.
But think back to a period when you felt really well.
It probably wasn’t just about your body. Perhaps you enjoyed your work. You felt connected to others. You had energy, confidence, or simply the feeling that things were falling into place.
Conversely, someone can recover physically and still feel that life is out of balance. And someone with a chronic condition can find renewed direction and meaning.
Health does not always coincide with recovery.
Health is also about how we relate to what life asks of us.
That also changes the question we ask at work. Not only: What is going on?
But also: What helps someone to continue living and working meaningfully, and to do what matters?
